IRWL Installation Tips

LightGuard's in-roadway warning light systems operate on low voltage Direct Current (DC) power and can use either solar power or Alternating Current (AC) power converted to 12v DC.

To ensure system reliability, LightGuard's IRWL crosswalk system is hard-wired. A City Public Works crew or independent installation contractor can install a complete IRWL crosswalk system for a typical 2-lane mid-block crosswalk within 1-3 days.

Installation time varies based on the number of traffic lanes, the chosen IRWL equipment, and the installing crew's skill. Most IRWL systems are retrofitted to existing crosswalks.

The first step is determining the layout pattern or placement of each IRWL module according to the lane lines, parking lane, sidewalk, and crosswalk locations. (See Visual Installation Guidelines above, IRWL layoutsand Zone of Convergence).

Once the layout is determined, the next step is to saw cut for the IRWL system wiring. The saw cut is generally no wider than .5″ wide and no greater than 2″ deep. Either conduit or direct burial wire can be utilized. Once the saw cut has been completed, locations for base plates are identified, and depression holes are bored into the road surface. (For complete in-depth instructions, please see the LightGuard Installation Manual.

The standard 10″ diameter x 1.5″ deep base plate is made of an ultra-high-strength composite material. It is designed to be permanently embedded into the roadway. This allows for any in-roadway warning light (IRWL) signal head that becomes damaged or inoperable to be repaired with an easy-to-install replacement.

For "snow country" use, we offer a Snow Plow Blade Resistant Base PlateThe case-hardened steel base plate has wingtips on either side of the IRWL signal head and a center nose bridge. When a snowplow blade strikes the base plate, the blade is lifted up and over the top of the IRWL signal head. The steel base plate is 14″ in diameter and is no more than 1.5″ deep.

    • mid-block uncontrolled public crosswalks
    • school zones
    • trail crossings
    • facility entrances/exits, such as airports and hospitals

    IRWL Activation Methods

IRWL can be activated via push-buttons, passive pedestrian detection bollards, and motion-activated sensors. Once activated, the light fixtures flash, warning motorists up to 1,000 feet in advance.

    IRWL Mounting

    • Lightstar M12 easily connects to the electrical cable system wires with water resitant splices. The interior of the light fixture unit is designed with double redundancy, isolating the sealed LED modules from environmental moisture and corrosive intrusion.

    Debris-Free Self Clearing

    • Lightstar M12 is designed to fit tightly into the protective base plate, containing a Debris-Free Self Clearing built-in feature. Fluted air channels push air up and away as tires pass over the base plate, keeping the LED light fixture free from debris build-up.
    • The slight elevation of the IRWL fixture positioned above the road grade is further intended to help alleviate any blockage by debris. Its shallow 1-1/2″ depth ensures that the subsurface roadbed is not compromised.

Enlighten1™ Flash Rate — Photosensitive Epilepsy Safe

    • Our Enlighten1™ flash rate reaches a primitive part of the brain that elicits a response to danger. It was developed in conjunction with the University of California, Berkeley Vision Detection Laboratory and designed to catch the motorists' attention without creating any unwanted adverse effects flashing lights might have on photosensitive epilepsy.
    • According to the Epilepsy Foundation of America, exposure to flashing lights at specific intensities or certain visual patterns can trigger seizures in 3 percent of people with epilepsy. This condition is known as photosensitive epilepsy. Enlighten1 is a public safety feature unique to LightGuard Systems' flashing LED warning products.

    IRWL Crosswalk Installation

    • When installing IRWL at crosswalks, each IRWL faces away from the crosswalk and points in the direction of oncoming motorists' (NOT straight forward). The result is a slightly different, uniquely pointed angle for each IRWL.
    • Before installation, the proposed IRWL site should be observed with particular attention to vehicle tire paths. As per Section 4N.05 & .06 of the MUTCD, IRWLs should be installed in each traffic lane, at the centerline of the roadway, at each edge of the road, or parking lanes, or other suitable locations away from the average tire track paths. The location of the IRWLs within the lanes should be based on engineering judgment. For additional information, refer to our published IRWL layouts.

    Warranty & Maintenance

    • LightGuard Systems offers a three-year conditional warranty on its in-roadway warning light fixtures and five years on its base plates. Maintenance includes removing four bolts electrically disconnect and lifting the fixture out of the base plate. Our IRWL fixtures are designed for 100% backward compatibility with any older generation base plate models.

IRWL Roadway Layout Tips & Diagrams

When positioning the IRWL light fixtures, take great care to observe traffic flow patterns. The goal is to not place the IRWLs directly underneath wheel paths. Vehicle tires should straddle the IRWLs, not drive directly over them. General placement tips are below.

  • Place IRWLs at the edges of the roadway to define the shoulders
  • Next, place IRWLs on the centerline for a 2-Lane 2-Way crosswalk
  • For crosswalks with a center turn lane, place IRWLs directly in the center, at the mid-point of the lane
  • For all other remaining traffic lanes, place one IRWL fixture in the center, at the mid-point of each travel lane
  • Aim each light fixture towards approaching motorists at eye level. The result is a unique position for each IRWL, as shown in the below diagrams

To learn more about our factory-recommended IRWL placements, refer to the LightGuard Systems Installation and User Manual and Zone of Convergence

  • System Controllers

AC & Solar Lighted Crosswalk System Controllers – from LightGuard Systems®

Controllers function as the “brain” of the Smart Crosswalk lighted crosswalk system. Users can set up and adjust the activation timing of the flashing LED lights, monitor the system, capture data, and more. A fail-safe feature automatically warns users of any system malfunction.

Our controllers are available in AC, solar, and wireless solar operation and accept activation signals from manual push-button devices and passive pedestrian detection devices such as bollards, remote activation devices (RADs), and motion detection sensors. Automatic pedestrian detectors only initiate the flashing sequence as pedestrians enter the crosswalk, not as they are exiting.

When the system controller is activated, it sends a signal to the system, initiating the Enlighten 1™, wig-wig (RRFB), or custom flash pattern of in-roadway warning lights (IRWL), flashing LED border-enhanced warning signs, and/or RRFBs.

    Advanced AC & Solar Controllers

    • Our advanced AC and Solar controllers can monitor and store data, such as time, date, and movement in each crosswalk direction. They can be programmed to turn on automatically at a specific time and then revert to standby mode for regular operation. They also have instantaneous backup power in the event of a power failure.
    • The advanced controller accepts call signal inputs from manual pedestrian push-button devices and automatic activation detectors (bollards, motion sensors, and other external inputs). Once activated, the Enlighten1™ flashing light pattern is emitted by the in-pavement warning lights, and any additional LED enhanced signage.
    • The advanced controller can also be enhanced to accommodate additional pedestrian safety measures such as simultaneous yet independently activated crosswalks (dual zones), remote communication, and custom-based applications.
